Ministerial Opening For Calvert II Power Station

Stephen Timms MP, the Minister of State for Energy, has performed the official opening of the Calvert II landfill gas power station. The new £8 million ‘green’ electricity plant supplies renewable energy, equivalent to the power needs of about 18,000 homes, to the local network grid. Formally opening the Calvert II station, Energy Minister Mr Timms described it as: “…making a really substantial contribution in energy and environmental terms. I welcome that and congratulate everyone involved.”

Five GE Jenbacher lean burn, spark ignited gas engines in individually soundproofed compartments, are fed with methane gas from the local Landfill site. The purpose designed gas engines provide high reliability and efficiency coupled with the latest technology emissions control. Each of the JGS620 engines has a power output of 2.4MW. Clarke Energy proved to be a key contractor working alongside Shanks Waste Solutions to commission the site on time and to budget. « Building on from existing outline planning consent, the whole project was fast-tracked and construction – from cutting soil to commissioning – took the team just under seven months, » said Paul Andrews, Director of Power Generation for Shanks Waste Services. « Even more pleasing is the fact that, since power generation started, everything has performed at or exceeded expectations. »

John Fletcher Senior Project Manager at Clarke Energy said « this further demonstrates Clarke Energy’s expertise in turnkey power engineering solutions in this important UK renewable energy sector ». Ian Davis, Managing Director for Clarke Energy, concluded « we were delighted to undertake this business for Shanks against strong competition, and we hope this contract represents the start of a strong working relationship with this important customer.
