In engleza: Clarke Energy India Highlights Biomethane Potential at Sugar Industry Seminar

Tuesday, April 30, Clarke Energy India participated as a sponsor in the seminar titled “Sugar Industry – Biofuels, Ethanol, and Allied By-products”, as organized by Cogeneration Association of India in the city of Belagavi, Karnataka.

As per reports Karnataka Sugar Industry ranks 3rd in terms of its contribution of sugar in the total sugar production in the country. The sugar industry in Karnataka can manufacture sugar in such huge quantities since sugarcane is abundantly available in the state. In fact, Karnataka stands 4th in the country in the cultivation of sugarcane. Karnataka alongside Maharashtra has the highest potential for generating compressed biogas (CBG) from sugarcane and distillery waste.

In his presentation, Abhijit Rajguru – Deputy General Manager Marketing & Business Development (India & Bangladesh) highlighted that as India aims for its goal for getting net-zero emissions by 2070,  biomethane is one of the most prominent routes to providing an economical, secure energy supply whilst reaching these targets. This is due to biomethane being considered a ‘carbon neutral’ energy source, as the carbon released originates from organic materials, which offset emissions during their lifetime. Furthermore, by undertaking proper system integration clearly specifying methane recovery in addition to methane purity to be achieved by biogas upgrading projects, we can prevent methane, a large contributor to greenhouse gases being released into the atmosphere and generate higher revenue by increasing the energy content of renewable natural gas being injected into the gas grid. Though by injecting biomethane into the gas grid, one can greatly increase the efficiency of the energy source, he urged the project developers to evaluate biogas upgrading projects being coupled with captive biogas-based power generation facility enabling renewable natural gas to be called as “green gas” acceptably. He shared information on Clarke Energy’s engineering, procurement, construction, and aftersales support capabilities for an integrated biogas upgrading system, including power generation.

Thanks to Cogeneration Association of India for giving us an opportunity to speak and present our views on upgrading biogas to biomethane using membrane gas separation technology in sugar mills & distillery industry sector.
