There were a great deal of businesses that applied and Clarke Energy made it into the top five. The judges were impressed with the company’s export success and were impressed with Clarke Energy working with UKTI when moving into new territories. In the application we explained how there are various sectors in which we target in the Sub-Saharan continent such as captive power plants for industry users. Their aim is to have their own power utilising the local natural gas supply network gas engine-based cogeneration systems which provide a stable supply of electrical power that, if needed, can be isolated from the local electricity grid. Another sector is biogas, formed by the anaerobic decomposition of putrescible organic material. Biogas CHP (combined heat and power or cogeneration) is the disposal of problematic wastes and the production of a low carbon fertiliser. Coal gas or furnace gas creates extreme profitability with overall efficiency of up to 90% in the case of combined heat and power, and 43.4% in the case of power generation alone. This also means a reduced environmental impact which is better for the country on a whole. There are various launch events in sub-Saharan Africa in Cameroon, Tanzania, Tunisia and South African launch events.
At Clarke Energy we have a policy of localisation which we feel strongly about. Ex patriots seed a new territory with their support as they work there they support skills and knowledge transfer to local nationals, as their knowledge base grows the ex-patriots are taken out. In Nigeria, our team consists of 81 Nigerian nationals with an in country parts stock holding to help support the performance of the product.
Some examples of projects that have been successful in Sub Saharan Africa are :
Kenya Tropical Power Energy Group was opened in 2015 and was Africa’s first grid-connect Anaerobic Digester (AD) plant generating 2.6MW of energy. The units will be supplied to an agricultural biogas plant located at a farm near Lake Naivasha, in Kenya.
Clarke Energy secured its first Jenbacher gas engine order in Mozambique with energy company Kuvaninga Energia which Lord Livingston congratulated Clarke Energy at 2014 International Festival for Business. This generates 40 MW and is an independent power producer.
Clarke Energy in Cameroon secured it first sale with SCTB flour mills. They will Provide 1.4-Megawatts installing a Jenbacher J420 Gas Engine. SCTB will to save more than $200,000 in Annual fuel costs by switching to GE’s Natural Gas unit. This will provide more reliable, cost-effective, on-site power for the company’s mills in the city of Douala.
