Biogas CHP Powering Mutton Island Wastewater Treatment Plant in Ireland

Mutton Island Wastewater Treatment Plant, located off the coast of Galway in the Republic of Ireland, is a vital part of the region’s wastewater infrastructure. In February 2022, Clarke Energy commissioned a combined heat and power (CHP) system designed to enhance energy efficiency and sustainability at the site. The new installation harnesses biogas produced onsite through the wastewater treatment process, converting it into renewable electricity and thermal energy to support plant operations.

At the heart of the solution is a Jenbacher JMS208GS-BL (C25) gas engine, delivering 330 kWe of electrical output and 355 kWth of thermal output, with an electrical efficiency of 38.6%. This particular model was selected based on the specific volume of biogas generated onsite, allowing the plant to maximise the value of its fuel source. The engine’s performance ensures the facility can produce a significant portion of its own energy needs, contributing to reduced utility costs and a lower carbon footprint.

The generated thermal energy is used to produce hot water, supporting essential onsite processes and further improving overall efficiency. By implementing this CHP system, Mutton Island WWTP is not only increasing its energy independence but also playing a key role in Ireland’s broader drive towards renewable and circular energy use within the wastewater sector.

A transactional maintenance agreement was signed to guarantee the long-term reliability and performance of the engine, supported by Clarke Energy’s local service team in Ireland. This installation stands as a strong example of how sewage gas can be transformed into a sustainable energy solution, offering both environmental and operational benefits to critical infrastructure facilities.

“The biogas CHP system from Clarke Energy has been a great addition to our operations. It allows us to make full use of the gas produced onsite, reducing our energy costs and supporting our sustainability goals.”
