Clarke Energy is a KOHLER® company and distributes KOHLER® generators in the South Pacific which are suitable for a wide range of applications including Marine Generation.
In late 2020, Clarke Energy were engaged to assist with specifying and the supply of marine generation project for an off-shore work vessel, which has undergone a complete refit and refurbishment in Fremantle, Western Australia in June 2021.
The vessel, a Damen 60M Sea Axe, has a range of 4,500 nautical miles with twelve rooms, a crew capacity of 30 and a commercially certified helicopter deck and a heavy-duty crane for lifting containers and pallets of supplies off her deck.
As part of the refurbishment, three KOHLER® Marine Generators were fitted, 2 x 175EFOZDJ and 1 x 125EFOZDJ supplied by Clarke Energy’s channel partner, Ches Power Group. Clarke Energy has carefully selected trusted channel partners throughout the South Pacific based on in house expertise, service capability, territorial coverage, and ongoing customer satisfaction.
KOHLER® marine generators are smaller and quieter. Having redesigned their sound shield (with separate engine and alternator compartments) the improved air- management system significantly reduces sound levels.
There is also less vibration. The Kohler proprietary vibration mount cushions the engine as it moves, to eliminate vibration. It’s what separates Kohler marine generators from the rest.
Best of all, Kohler is a true single source partner with every generator, alternator, control system and sound shield designed, manufactured, and assembled start to finish in our own facilities. Kohler marine generators have received certifications from the following maritime associations: American Bureau of Shipping, Bureau Veritas, Det Norske Veritas and Lloyd’s.
For this project, Kohler’s PGEN was utilised, which has resulted in simplifying the installation and giving the vessel’s operations greater flexibility when at sea.
Kohler has created the first marine generators with built-in paralleling controllers. Its innovative PGEN connection can parallel up to eight KOHLER generators of varying sizes with a single communication wire. When the first generator’s load is light, the second generator automatically drops off. When the load is heavy, the second generator automatically comes online to provide the power needed to carry the load.
Chris Leane, Clarke Energy’s Kohler Channel Partner Manager says, “The new gensets are also enclosed, reducing noise, vibration and increasing safety for those working in the engine room. The previous gensets were ‘open’ meaning the engines are exposed potentially increasing risk of injury to personnel due to the many moving parts, as well as being very noisy.”
Additionally, as part of the refurbishment, a large, Veem VG750SD gyro stabiliser was also fitted to the vessel. The new generators were upsized (from previously installed generators) to handle the start-up load from the gyro. https://veemmarine.com/gyrostabilizer/
