Waste-to-Energy Excellence: Landfill Gas Power Plant in Greece

HELECTOR, a subsidiary of ELLAKTOR Group, is an expert in the waste management and green energy production sector in South Eastern Europe. To further their commitment to alternative fuel production and biomass exploitation, HELECTOR selected Clarke Energy Hellas to supply and install a 3.52MW landfill gas power plant in Thessaloniki, Greece.

The system is powered by three INNIO Jenbacher JGC416 engines, operating on biogas gas extracted from the landfill as a primary fuel source. This innovative approach to harnessing methane emissions demonstrates the efficacy of waste-to-energy projects in addressing sustainability challenges. The plant produces approximately 27,000MWh of clean energy annually and prevents millions of tons of CO2 emissions by harnessing a problem gas as an energy source.

The collaboration between HELECTOR and Clarke Energy has set a benchmark for integrated waste management solutions in Greece. In 2023, the project received two awards “National Energy Globe Greece 2023” and “Energy Globe World Award 2023” for showcasing the global potential of scalable waste-to-energy projects.

Mr. Christos Chasapopoulos, Operations Manager of Mavrorachi commented:

“Mavrorachi is a project of strategic importance for the energy and environmental improvement of the peripheral landfills. The project and awards received highlight how such an innovative project can benefit the environment, enhance the quality of life, reduce emissions, and ultimately address the critical issue of climate change”.
