Job Opportunity: Safety, Health, Environmental and Quality (SHEQ) Director
Location: Knowsley, UK (with travel across the UK, Ireland, and some overseas travel required)

As the SHEQ Director, you will be responsible for developing and implementing safety, health, environmental, and quality programs to ensure compliance with industry standards and legislation. Your role will involve working closely with senior management, site managers, and project teams to maintain high standards across all our operations. Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Leadership:
- Develop and implement the company’s safety and health strategy in alignment with business objectives.
- Establish key performance metrics for SHEQ and lead initiatives to improve safety performance across construction and engineering sites.
- Advise executive management on health and safety compliance matters, including legislation and best practices.
- Lead and mentor the QUENSH (Quality, Environmental, Health, Safety) department to ensure alignment with company objectives.
Policy Development:
- Create, update, and enforce health and safety policies that comply with both local and international regulations.
- Monitor evolving safety regulations, ensuring compliance and proactive adjustments.
- Conduct audits and reviews, updating policies to remain compliant with changes in industry standards.
- Ensure adherence to health and safety procedures by employees, contractors, and visitors, conducting safety briefings and drills.
Risk Management & Safety:
- Lead risk assessments and hazard identification activities on high-risk sites.
- Implement preventive measures to mitigate occupational risks and improve safety outcomes.
- Investigate incidents, determining root causes and driving corrective actions to prevent future occurrences.
Quality Assurance:
- Manage the Quality process, liaising with auditors, clients, subcontractors, and suppliers.
- Retain and enhance ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 accreditations.
Collaboration & Communication:
- Work closely with site managers, project teams, and contractors to resolve safety issues in real-time.
- Serve as the liaison between Clarke Energy, regulatory authorities, insurance companies, and industry safety boards.
- Prepare and present safety and compliance reports to senior leadership, identifying challenges and areas for improvement.
- Collaborate with legal and HR departments on workers’ compensation claims to ensure compliance with laws.
Incident Management & Reporting:
- Develop incident reporting systems and oversee investigation processes to ensure thorough documentation.
- Analyse safety data to identify trends and recommend initiatives to reduce workplace incidents.
Environmental Compliance:
- Oversee environmental compliance, ensuring proper waste management, emissions control, and environmental permitting.
- Ensure projects meet sustainability standards and comply with environmental regulations.
Budgeting & Resource Allocation:
- Develop and manage the SHEQ department’s budget, ensuring appropriate allocation for safety equipment, training, and technology solutions.
- Lead procurement for safety equipment and ensure its proper use across sites.
Essential Qualifications & Skills:
- Minimum 10 years of experience in health and safety management, including at least 5 years in a leadership role within construction or engineering.
- Extensive knowledge of safety regulations and quality standards in construction and engineering.
- Familiarity with safety management software and incident reporting platforms.
- Proven track record in leading cross-functional teams in a high-pressure environment.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to present to senior management and collaborate effectively across teams.
- Strong analytical skills and the ability to develop solutions to complex safety challenges.
- High level of accuracy in regulatory compliance and documentation.
Desirable Qualifications & Skills:
- Experience in large-scale construction or engineering projects such as energy, infrastructure, or industrial facilities.
- Bachelor’s degree in Health and Safety, Engineering, or an MBA.
- Familiarity with international safety standards (ISO 45001).
